World Cup moments: Gotze stuns Rio

The last edition of the prestigious torunament took place in Brazil in 2014 and saw then Bayern Munich man Mario Gotze become a national hero. 

Argentina had won ever single one of their games on the road to the final and, with Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain leading the line, were daunting opposition for Joachim Low's Germans.

After 90 minutes, the game remained goalless and was yet to live up to expectations of the blockbuster fixture it was billed as. Unaware of it's significance at the time, Low made a pivotal substitution two minutes before the final whistle: Klose off, Gotze on.

Sweating in the Brazilian heat, the sides refuelled and discussed tactics before returning to the turf for the grand finale. 

With a little over 7 minutes left on the clock, Andre Schurrle launched a slalom run down the left wing and spotted Gotze making an intelligent burst into the box. Schurrle clipped the ball into the midfielder, and the rest is history.

Taking the ball down on his chest, Gotze then lashed the ball on the volley beyond Sergio Romero who stood dumbfounded by the speed of the German attack. 

The scoreboard turned to 1-0 and scenes of euphoria filled the Maracana. Having waited patiently on the bench for 88 minutes, Gotze had won Germany their fourth World Cup.
