Chelsea drew first blood at Stamford Bridge through Timo Werner just before the half hour against a Real Madrid side who could have scored courtesy of Benzema.
Werner, who was singled out in the first leg for missing from inside the six yard box, made amends and headed home from just one yard out.
The move started after a lovely run by Kante following Werner's pass. The Frenchman played the ball to the left to leave Havertz one on one with Thibaut Courtois.
The former Leverkusen man hit the crossbar with a deft chip and Werner headed home the rebound from a yard out to give Chelsea the lead.
