The 57-year-old will have to find another club. As well as Aston Villa, Steve Bruce has managed Sheffield United, Huddersfield, Wigan, Crystal Palace, Birmingham, Sunderland and Hull City.
The final straw for Bruce appears to have been last night's 3-3 draw at home to Preston North End which left Villa with 15 points from 11 games in the Championship, despite having spent large amounts over the summer transfer window.
During the game, a cabbage was also thrown at the boss along with chants of "We want Brucie out" from the Holte End.
Though, after the game, Bruce appeared positive over his future with the 'Villains'. He said: "That's for others [to decide]. You need results. The one thing I've always had is the determination to roll up my sleeves and get stuck in. I'll always have a go.
"If I think it affects the team and the morale of the team, then of course…That's what I'm up against at the moment. I will battle on. That's always been my philosophy until told otherwise."
Thierry Henry, Sam Allardyce and Brentford manager Dean Smith are current favourites to take over the position.
