The debate has come to the fore after the recent Scotland-Argentina game in the Women's World Cup in which Argentina managed to get a draw in dramatic fashion after they were 3-0 down. They did so with a penalty in injury time which had to be retaken.
Bonsegundo hit it with her right foot, but Alexander saved it. The goalie's joy was short lived though as the keeper came a few centimetres off her line and the VAR ordered a retake.
The Argentinian made no mistake from the spot second time around. Despite making it 3-3, it was a draw which neither side was happy with. In this case, the VAR buzzed in, but this will not happen next season in the Premier League. The competition, which is using the VAR for the first time, has said though that the situation will be reviewed throughout the season.
According to 'The Times', the VAR will not intervene if a goalkeeper has come off his line and it will be the on-field officials who have to spot the offence for themselves.
