With Luis Suarez having opened the scoring in minute ten, Russia were in need of a goal to keep their hopes of finishing top of Group A alive, however when Denis Cheryshev scored in the 23rd minute, it was unfortunately in the wrong goal.
The Russian forward has already scored three times so far in the tournament, but his first own-goal came as a result of some poor fortune.
The move started with Artem Dzyuba clearing an Uruguayan corner, however the ball only made it as far as Diego Laxalt, who hit a speculative effort from around 25 yards out.
The shot was most likely headed wide of the goal, but a it deflected off Cheryshev, and the change in direction wrong-footed the goalkeeper, giving Uruguay a two goal cushion.
