According to data complied by UEFA themselves, there are nine more chances for the star duo to write their names into the competition's history.
Goals in finals
To date, the players to have scored most goals in European Cup finals are both Real Madrid legends, with Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás having managed seven. Ronaldo is the closest of the pair with four, leaving Messi lagging behind with just two.
Di Stéfano also has the record for having scored in the most finals (all five from 1956 to 1960), whilst Puskás has the impressive claim of being able to say that he plundered five goals in the 1960 final. Ronaldo's brace in the 2017 showpiece against Juventus is the closest anyone has come since to that figure.
Games played
Iker Casillas dominates this ranking with 172 Champions League appearances to his name, 179 if we include qualifying. Messi and Ronaldo sit some way back with 130 and 162 respectively.
The Argentine is 35th in the all-time list of appearance makers, with Ronaldo sitting sixth. However, with the former Real Madrid goalkeeper still active they face a difficult task to hunt down his record.
Triumphs with different teams
Cristiano Ronaldo may have scored in Champions League finals with two different teams which both went on to win the competition (Manchester United and Real Madrid), a feat that no other player has achieve. But, it is Clarence Seedorf who has won the competition with the most teams: Ajax, Real Madrid, AC Milan.
Therefore the Portuguese would match the record should he win the competition with the 'Old Lady' in the coming years. Leo Messi's status as a one-club man mean he is not in contention for this one.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic also has a slice of Champions League history, with no player having scored for more teams in the competition than his tally of six (Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan, PSG).
Oldest goalscorer
Given how well the pair look after themselves they could play for a few more years yet, potentially drawing them into contention for this record. Paolo Maldini's goal for AC Milan against Liverpool in 2005 makes him the oldest player to score in a final (36 years and 333 days).
However, the oldest goal scored in a Champions League match was scored by AS Roma legend Francesco Totti, who found the back of the new away to CSKA Moscow in November 2014 at the age of 38 years and 59 days.
German Manfred Burgsmuller holds the European Cup record, having scored for Werder Bremen against Dinamo Berlin on October 11, 1988 ages 38 years and 293 days.
Fastest goal
Eleven years on Roy Makaay continues to hold the record for the fastest goal in a Champions League game after finding the net for Bayern Munich against Real Madrid during the 2006/07 campaign after just 10.12 seconds.
The fastest goal in a final is a long-standing record too, with that one coming via Paolo Maldini's strike for AC Milan against Liverpool back in 2005 for which he needed just 53 seconds.
So far, both Messi and Ronaldo's fastest Champions League goals came after four minutes.
Fastest hat-trick
Messi's hat-trick against PSV moved him above Ronaldo as the player to have scored the most hat-tricks in the competition, with a total of eight, though he still needs to improve the speed of his goalscoring if he is to claim this record.
Bafétimbi Gomis is the surprising holder of the record for the fastest hat-trick in the competition, having needed only eight minutes to complete his treble for Lyon away to Dinamo Zagreb seven seasons ago.
For his part, Messi's fastest comes in at 22 minutes, with Ronaldo having managed it in 12 against Malmo in 2012.
However, the Portuguese shares the record with Luiz Adriano as being the only players to have scored back-to-back Champions League hat-tricks.
Most consecutive seasons on the scoresheet
Ryan Giggs is a legend of the competition, having scored in 16 straight iterations of Europe's premier club competition. That impressive figure leaves him out in front of Messi (14) and Ronaldo (13) for now, but the pair are closing in fast.
This is among the easier records that still eludes the stars.
Top goalscorer in a single season
It appears that Ronaldo and Messi's best goalscoring campaigns are behind them, but you can never take things for granted with those two. They'll need to put in a string of exquisite performances if they're to beat the record for most goals in a single season of a European competition.
Radamel Falcao is the proud holder, having plundered a remarkable 18 goals for Porto during the 2010/2011 Europa League season, with one coming in qualifying and the other 17 from the Group Stage onwards.
Ronaldo came incredibly close to the tally last season, eventually falling just a single goal short, whilst Messi's best seasonal tally came as he claimed 14 seven years ago.
Ronaldo's tally of 17 in a single single Champions League season is a record in that competition.
Goals-per-game ratio
When the topic of discussing is era-defining strikers then Gerd Muller's name is never far away. The German was one of the most gifted goal-getters of a generation and has the best goals-to-game ratio in European history to show for it: 0.971.
Both Messi and Ronaldo certainly know where the back of the net is, but neither of them come close to 'Der Bomber'. The Portuguese's record of 121 goals in 158 games gives him a ratio of 0.766, with Messi's slightly worse at 123 goals from 162 games (0.759).
To put Muller's tally into perspective, Messi would need to score a hat-trick in his next 11 games to match his ratio, whilst Ronaldo would need to do the same in his next 16 games.
