The attacker showed a T-shirt with a photo of Damary Dawkins on it. Damary was a footballer for Crystal Palace who died last Sunday at the age of 13. The player lifted up his shirt so that his undershirt was visible. On it, there was a photo of the boy with the words "May your soul rest in peace." A beautiful gesture which could ended costing him dearly.
The rules, modified in 2014, state that "players cannot reveal undershirts which contain political, religious or personal messages or any kind of advertising which is not the kit maker's logo." Sterling broke this rule and could now be faced with a punishment which is fair according to the letter of the law, but seems illogical and unfair in the circumstances.
