The Euros came to a close as Italy faced England at Wembley. 90 minutes could not split them and extra time could not either.
Just like in the Euro 1996 semi-final against Germany, England were beaten on penalties. This time, it prevented them from winning their first ever Euros. On that occasion, Gareth Southgate, as a player, missed the decisive penalty.
25 years later, he lost a penalty shootout again, but this time as a manager. The Englishman was criticised for some of his decisions during the penalty shootout and even earlier on in the tournament.
Southgate brought on Sancho and Rashford in the closing stages of extra-time to take a penalty, but they both missed.
The England manager took the blame for the defeat and said he was the one who decided who should take a penalty. The truth is that, once again 12 yards, England lost a shootout at the Euros on penalties and they missed a golden chance to win it.
