Martin Skrtel has announced that the time to retire will come at the end of the current season, after speculation for some time that injuries and being without a team would precipitate his retirement. The centre-back will leave behind a long career in European football after an indelible spell at Anfield.
Although he currently plays for Spartak Trnava, the football fan remembers him for his time at Liverpool. He played up to 320 games in the Reds' kit, scoring 18 goals and providing five assists. From 08-09 to 15-16 he enjoyed the 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.
Before moving to the Premier League, Skrtel played for Zenit, from where he left for Liverpool. He went on to play for Fenerbahce, Atalanta, Istanbul and Spartak Trnava, his current club. He currently has made a total of 599 professional appearances, a figure he is close to finishing.
