According to 'Sportsmail', José María 'Guti' Gutiérrez is in the running for the vacancy along with several other names at this point. However, former Hearts boss Robbie Neilson withdrew his candidacy after concerns over the player budget.
Guti is currently part of the coaching team for the youth ranks at the Santiago Bernabeu, and had been vaguely linked with the top job at Real Madrid after Zinedine Zidane announced his departure last week.
The 41-year-old is reportedly keen on a move to the Scottish Premiership, and has no problems with the wage on offer or the lack of budget available to the incoming manager at the newly-promoted club.
According to the report, St Mirren hierarchy will begin interviewing candidates over the next 48 hours and are hoping to announce the new appointment at the start of next week.
