Punching? Luton on brink of Premier League

Just nine years ago, plucky Luton Town were down in the fifth tier of English football. The Hatters are now on the edge of securing promotion to the top flight of English football, with just Coventry City to get past in the Championship play-off final.

Some could say Luton Town are punching above their weight by being within 90 minutes of securing what would be their first ever season in the Premier League. Less than a decade ago, the side from North London were all the way down in the fifth flight of English football.

The Hatters have come on a long journey since their promotion to the football league in 2013-14. Even their stint in the fourth tier was not a walk in the park, with the side struggling to get out, before eventually being promoted to League One in 2018.

From then on, the trajectory has only been on the rise, with the side staying in the third tier for just one season before knocking on the door of the Prem. It has been a steady rise for the side in the second tier as well, as they made the jump look like child's play - 19th, 12th then 6th placed finishes have landed them exactly where they want to be, with the shot at going for the Premier League on the 27th May 2023.

Some have speculated that the club may have to temporarily move from their home ground if they are to achieve the feat, with Kenilworth Road's capacity just brushing over the 10,000 mark. Not only that, it is showing signs of tiring, after more than 100 years in use.

Coventry City will be the ones who try and burst the Luton bubble come the end of May, who themselves have been through a tough spell, with the ex-Premier League Sky Blues even dropping in the fourth tier for a short, one-season spell. No matter what happens in the final, all eyes will be on Wembley to see who ends what is often billed as the world's most valuable game (in terms of the riches earned for Premier League football), and who wins the prize of going up against the likes of Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Man United.
