Mesut Ozil is back. While he may be light years away from the sparkling player that took the world by storm in the 2014 World Cup and who became a star in Real Madrid, the truth is that the German can now see light at the end of the tunnel.
The 32-year-old finally got back his goalscoring touch for the first time in 18 months in no less than Fenerbahce's opening league match of the 2021/22 season. Ozil hadn't found the back of the net since 16th February 2020, in Arsenal's 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle in the Premier League.
Much has gone down since that as, amongst other things, the German put an end to his career as a Gunner to start a new adventure in the Turkey's Super Lig. But all didn't go to plan at Fenerbahce, after a series of physical problems limited him to just eleven matches in his first season, in 2020/21. It was a very different story for the season that's just started, however.
Ozil kicked off the 2021/22 campaign by treating his side to the decisive goal in a victory over Adana Demispor. He scored the only goal of a game in 0-1 win and, in doing so, putting an end to a goal draught to forget.
