Unai Emery has been sacked as Arsenal manager after a poor run in the Premier League and the Europa League. The Gunners' performance against Eintracht Frankfurt was expected to be the make-or-break for the Spaniard; the team's fragile performance and eventual loss las night is assumed to have been the last push for his departure after months of uncertainty.
Arsenal have published a statement that reads: "Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.”
Arsenal's poor run both at home for the Premier League and in the Europa League this season have caused his firing, but the coach had been struggling since first arriving 18 months ago under the shadow of Arsene Wenger's 22 year spell at Arsenal.
The club statement confirms that "the decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required".
Freddie Ljungberg, part of the backroom staff this season and a former player for the club between 1998 and 2007 will be taking responsibility as caretaker manager: "We have asked Freddie Ljungberg to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach. We have full confidence in Freddie to take us forward."
