The Eredivisie has ended. There is no champion. There is no promotion nor relegation. That is the decision that the Steering Committee of the Dutch Football Federation has finally taken after a video call meeting with all clubs, which has been reported by several media in the Netherlands.
The decision was taken after the country's Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, made clear that football would be postponed until September. If it were to continue, this would have taken up a large chunk of the 2020-21 campaign.
In this way, Ajax and AZ Alkmaar, who were tied for points at the top, have been left without knowing which of the two would be the winner. There were 8 matches left, but they will not be played. The league will have to start again.
The teams that benefit the most from this in the top league are RKC Waalwijk, el ADO Den Haag and Fortuna Sittard. The first 2 would have been relegated to the 2nd tier if the current table was used, and the 3rd would have had to play a playoff to try and save themselves.
