Arsene Wenger earlier today claimed that Arsenal were in talks with representatives of Valenica defender Shkodran Mustafi.
However, the move now may be in doubt according to Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague who works for 'Sky Sports'.
Balague says that Valencia are hoping to keep hold of the German as it is too close to the transfer deadline to sign a replacement.
This means that the only way in which Valencia would sell the player is if Arsenal meet Mustafi's release clause, which stands at €50m.
It is thought that Arsenal would not pay €50m for Mustafi, with Balague saying "I think everybody will agree [it] is too much money for him".
If true, this may mean that Arsenal will turn their attentions to another target. One name that has been mentioned recently is West Brom's Jonny Evans.
Interestingly, West Brom have just signed Everton defender Brendan Galloway on loan, could this pave the way for Evans to join Arsenal?
