Not even Argentina's dismal performances can stop Messi from scoring. He may appear isolated on his own up top and with little service, but he continues to add to his goal tally for his country.
Against Paraguay, the Barcelona star notched his 68th goal for Argentina - exactly double the amount that Diego Maradona scored (34).
The Barcelona forward needed 132 games to score his 68 goals, whilst Maradona scored 34 in 69 appearances. This means that Messi's goals per game ratio is also slightly better than Maradona's (0.51 v 0.49).
Furthermore, 'AS' have insisted that at club level, the two players are incomparable. Messi has scored 603 goals for Barcelona as well as the 68 with Argentina, whereas Maradona finished his career with 345 goals in total: 311 at club level added to the aforementioned 34 with his country.
Messi will almost certainly soon have twice as many goals as the Argentinian managed in his career, but it's unlikely that the 31 year-old will be able to compete with Maradona in terms of titles won at international level.
Although he has finished as a runner-up in Brazil 2014, just as Maradona did at Italia 1990, it seems more and more unlikely that Messi will be able to win a World Cup like 'El Pelusa' did in Mexico in 1986.
