"Mbappe's Euro is not worthy of a captain"

Former France player Emmanuel Petit on Tuesday criticised star striker Kylian Mbappe, saying his tournament "so far is not worthy of a captain" because "he doesn't take enough responsibility on the pitch".

Speaking on German television 'NTV', the retired midfielder said the forward "hasn't been at his best since the start of this European Championship" and that "he's not in good form" and that "his broken nose is also hurting him".

"It was already too late when he was replaced at half-time in extra time in the quarter-final against Portugal. He should have been substituted after an hour at the most," Petit said.

Despite the criticism, Petit, who played for Barcelona and was a 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 winner, said he was confident Mbappe would "suddenly explode in the semi-finals".

"He will play only because the opponent is called Spain. Otherwise, I would have left him on the bench," concluded Petit on the performance of Mbappe, who has only managed to score one goal in the four games he has played and from a penalty.
