It was top against bottom at the Stade Saint-Symphorien. Metz had not picked up a point from their opening four games whilst the visitors had won all four. PSG managed to extend their perfect start to the Ligue 1 season with a victory on the night of teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe's debut.
The 18-year-old's debut got off to the right start, with the away side keeping the ball nicely and dominating possession in the early stages.
PSG’s expensively assembled forward line slowly grew into the game and their first real chance came when Draxler threaded the ball through to Cavani who dinked over the keeper but onto the post.
The breakthrough then came when Neymar’s teasing through ball was met by both Mbappe and Cavani, but it was the Uruguayan who took over and rounded the keeper before slotting into the empty net to give his side a deserved lead.
Mbappe’s confidence was clearly growing as he set Cavani up for two quickfire chances. The first chance was created by Mbappe with a lovely backheel to the Uruguayan, who fired into the keepers hands from the edge of the box. The French international then sent a delightful cross into the box with the outside of his foot, and Cavani headed down, forcing Kawashima into making a good save.
However, the home side clearly hadn’t read Mbappe’s script as they levelled just 6 minutes after falling behind. Dossevi had plenty of space on the right hand side of the box and he crossed in for Riviere to head home from close range with his side’s first shot on target.
Neymar had a chance to put his side ahead just before half-time but his shot across goal was tipped round expertly before Kawashima to ensure the two sides went in level at the break
Metz started the second half well and should’ve taken the lead when Riviere took advantage of some comical defending from PSG but blasted over the bar when the goal was gaping.
The home side’s job was made all the more difficult when Benoit Assou-Ekotto was giving his marching orders after 56 minutes for a shocking challenge on PSG golden boy Mbappe.
With Metz down to 10 men, PSG really stepped things up and it wasn’t long before they were back in the lead.
After 59 minutes Mbappe got his coveted debut goal. His chipped ball through to Neymar was blocked and fell straight back at his feet and the striker fired first-time past the goalkeeper from outside the box.
PSG continued to be totally dominant and Neymar, not wanting to be outdone by the new arrival from Monaco, made it 3-1 after 69 minutes. Rabiot passed to the Brazilian who advanced unchallenged towards the edge of the box before shooting low into the right corner past Kawashima.
The away side didn’t stop there as Cavani grabbed his second of the night. Mbappe got his first assist in PSG colours as he deflected a cross towards the Uruguayan striker who prodded home from close range on the 75 minute mark.
Lucas Moura rounded things off after coming on as a substitution minutes earlier, as he stabbed home off the post after a cross in from Thomas Meunier, making it 5-1 to the away side.
With Cavani, Neymar and Mbappe all getting on the scoresheet, Unai Emery and the PSG fans will be hoping this is a sign of things to come as their record-breaking attacking force looks to set Europe alight.
The big spenders from the French capital remain top of Ligue 1 and already look like a formidable force in the early days of this Ligue 1 campaign.
