Koeman names Van Dijk as Netherlands captain

Ronald Koeman, who was hired as Netherlands manager in February, has chosen Van Dijk to take the armband, which was previously worn by veteran winger Arjen Robben. Robben retired in October 2017, and although Koeman had sat down with the Bayern Munich to attempt to persuade him to continue playing for the 'Oranje', he was not to be budged, and has stood firm on his retirement.
Van Dijk has therefore been chosen as the next leader of the Dutch side, as they prepare for their friendly fixture against England on Friday. England are using the game as a warm up for this summer's World Cup, however the Netherlands didn't qualify, and will enjoy a summer off.
The Liverpool centre-back is 26 years old, and broke the transfer record for a defender when Liverpool splashed £70m on him in January. He has been a commanding presence for the 'Reds' since he joined the side, and has started seven games for Jurgen Klopp's side, keeping three clean sheets.
The defender, who worked with Koeman previously at Southampton, said that being named captain was a special achievement for him. "To be named international captain of Holland is very special and does a lot for me," he said. "It's going to be very special. Against England is a little bit more special."
