Speaking ahead of his European tour to check on his international players before Argentina's squad selection for the World Cup, Sampaoli had some stern advice for the 24-year-old regarding speculation of a move to Real Madrid.
"I spoke with Icardi and I told him what to do... That he cannot relax and that if he does well he will be called up [to the Argentina World Cup squad]".
He concluded: "I know Madrid are following him closely and that he is almost tempted by [it]".
The comments come after the Argentine forward posted a cryptic message on his Instagram page which read: "To say goodbye is to grow".
Speculation about the possible transfer may be unnecessary with Zinedine Zidane looking set on making no transfer signings this window, however, Icardi would appear to be one of 'Los Blancos' top choices for next summer.
He has been in prolific form for Inter Milan this season, scoring 18 goals in 22 Serie A appearances so far with the striker aware that he will have to continue this performance if he is going to feature alongside Edinson Cavani, Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero.
