Against all odds, Tottenham Hotspur were defeated in their second group game in the Europa League 2020-21. The Londoners were outclassed by modest Belgian side Antwerp, who took all three points with a 1-0 win.
After the match, Jose Mourinho did not bite his tongue. The coach publicly showed his anger with the players and criticised their performance in a press conference.
"If I could have, I would have liked to make 11 changes," said a coach who, at the break of the duel, made four substitutions to try to get his team to react.
"We gave them the game, we let them win. That's what I can say about this match," said a Mourinho who was extremely annoyed with the performance of his players. "You know which is our best team. I always think that every footballer deserves a chance because we have a large squad. But there is also the opportunity to take that chance and ask for more. From now on, my future decisions are going to be very easy," he said.
Similarly, when asked why he did not make the five changes at half-time, 'The Special One' replied that he simply kept one as a precaution.
"I didn't make five changes because I was afraid of the second 45 minutes. It is fair to say that bad individual performances influenced the team but the team also influenced bad individual performances. I won't be the one to analyse some names individually here," he said
