It was one of the bombshells which ended up not going through in the January transfer window. Isco travelled to Berlin to join Union Berlin. However, when everything seemed signed and sealed, the deal fell through.
The Malagan, after passing his medical, saw Union Berlin end up rejecting him, with the whole footballing world in shock with the decision.
Ex-footballer Torsten Mattuschka, during 'Sky Sports' coverage in Germany when they were there expecting the deal to be closed, gave his theory as to why Isco ended up not going to Union Berlin.
"If there's a medical, in reality you're safe. Therefore there wasn't a problem. I think they disagreed over the gross and net salary. Because in Spain, footballers' contracts are negotiated in terms of net pay whereas here in Germany they're done in terms of gross pay", the ex-Union Berlin player said.
"In Germany I only signed contracts in gross. And if it wasn't discussed explicitly, they were only going to pay €2 million, but Isco wanted €2 million net. So that was the difference as to why he didn't sign for Union", he claimed.
