"I didn't cry, there was no lack of desire, but it's important to evolve"

Spanish national team captain Alvaro Morata regretted missing the penalty that kept the team away from the title in the Nations League final against Portugal and did not consider his continuity until the 2026 World Cup to be certain, admitting that “it is a possibility that he will not be there in September”.
"For sure there is nothing, it depends on many things. Right now I'm not thinking about that, only about my teammates and what happened today. Tomorrow will be another day, you have to think about things calmly. Of course it's a possibility that I won't be here in September," he said in the mixed zone of the Allianz Arena.
Morata was saddened by his penalty miss, but said he held back tears because his family was in the stands. "I didn't cry, there was no lack of desire, but one has to evolve in life, my children and my family are in the stands. Just as it was our turn to win recently, now we have to go through a complicated moment, but in life you have to learn".
"We have done a great job to try to bring another title for Spain and I feel bad for all my teammates because we have worked hard, but it is part of football and life. I thank the coach for his confidence, as always, it is clear that I have not shot well, I could have done better and you can't change that. Just as it was my turn to lift the European Championship, now it's my turn to go away disappointed," he added.
As captain, Morata defended Lamine Yamal's final. "For me it was a high level game from Lamine and the whole team. If the penalties had gone the other way, everything would look different with a title. He is a super young guy who we are very lucky to have playing for Spain and he is going to give us a lot of joy."
