The 'Saints' have had a decidedly mixed start ot the season, managing to pick up only two wins so far in this campaign and struggling to find the net, minues the contributions of Danny Ings.
With the next round of the EFL Cup about to get under way, Hughes is expected to make a number of changes to his squad as he looks to freshen things up.
Speaking ahead of the clash with Everton, the Welshman spoke of how the players on the fringe of his squad should take their opprtunity in the game to try and gain a spot in the league.
"We made changes last time against Brighton and we put in a really good performance." Hughes admitted.
"A number of those players made a claim and pushed themselves more into my thinking. I fully expect a number of them on Tuesday to do the same. That's up to them, they need to show me they are able to help us.
"They are all good players and a lot of them have been disappointed. It's been a little bit unfair for them, they haven't done anything wrong. We just have a fully fit squad and I can't pick everyone."
