Howe not considering De Gea to replace Pope

David de Gea was one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League last campaign, but in December he is yet to find a club after finishing his contract with Manchester United.

Several top clubs have tried to sign the Spanish goalkeeper but he has not yet decided on any of them. The 33-year-old has been rumoured in recent days to be returning to the Premier League to replace the injured Nick Pope at Newcastle.

However, English manager Eddie Howe has denied rumours of his possible arrival at St James Park at a press conference ahead of the matchday 15 clash with Everton.

"I’ve seen a lot of media headlines regarding goalkeepers and other players. We have not made any enquiries. If we were to recruit now we’d be recruiting in every area on the pitch. It’s a chance for the other keepers to consolidate their positions," he said when asked about possible replacements.

Howe went on to add: "We really believe in Martin [Dubravka]. Martin is a high class goalkeeper, very good with his feet and distribution."
