1. Stand-out performer at U21 Euros
Okay, so you probaby all know about this one. Despite Spain's U21 side eventually being defeated in the final of the U21 European Championship this summer, several players made quite the impression. Ceballos was one of them. The 20-year-old was named player of the tournament, putting him in esteemed company alongside previous winners Juan Mata, Andrea Pirlo, Petr Cech, Fabio Cannavaro and Luis Figo.
2. Style of play
Ceballos is best known for his technical ability. Upon signing his first pro deal with Betis, the club lauded his ability on the ball, saying that it often appeared to be glued to his foot. This ability coupled with Ceballos' vision and ability to run with the ball make for quite the skill set for a young player.
3. Twitter controversies
Naturally, after being linked with a big move, people started digging through the youngster's Twitter feed. What they found caused quite a stir. During the 2015 Copa del Rey final between Atheltic Bilbao and Barcelona, Ceballos (then 18), tweeted of his desire to drop a bomb on the stands and "kill those Catalan and Basque dogs". Ceballos also told said that Catalans should "get out of the country" after Gerard Pique and Cesc Fabregas were pictures celebrating Spain's 2012 European Championship win with a Catalan flag. The youngster did not only attack Barcelona however, he also criticised Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho for their conduct in the 2013 Copa del Rey final defeat to Atletico Madrid.
4. Gus Poyet didn't rate him
Ceballos made just one start under Poyet's stewardship, and in fact the Uruguayan's dismissal was a major factor in Ceballos' development. Poyet was replaced by Victor Sanchez, with Ceballos missing just two league games under the new boss. The 20-year-old has admitted that he struglled under Poyet, saying that he feared he would lose his place in the Spain U21 team and describing Poyet's tenure as a "difficult situation" for him.
5. He started his career with Betis' main rivals
Ceballos grew up in Utrera, in Southern Spain. At the age of eight he joined Sevilla's academy, but was released five years later due to chronic bronchitis. After a spell at hometown club CD Utrera he was snapped up by Betis' academy and signed a professional contract at the age of 17. Ceballos made his first team debut for Betis in 2014, before he had even featured in the B team.
