It was always going to be difficult for Brighton as they had never beaten Chelsea in London, and not won aginst 'the blues' since 1933. However, 'the seagulls' smelled an upset against a Chelsea side who had not enjoyed the best of starts and had not yet recorded a home league win.
Chelsea started the match well, and in the 14th minute, they had their first real chance of the match. Mount crossed in a free-kick, and Abraham's glancing header hit the post and went wide.
The home side had 24 shots in total, but could only manage 10 on target in a dominant performance. They had several more chances, but they could not break the deadlock as both teams went in at the break with the game goalless.
Chelsea came out after the interval all guns blazing. In a day that Brighton were prone to errors, the home side pounced on them all. In 49th minute, the London outfit punished the visitors. Webster's slack pass to Ryan was intercepted by Mount in the box: the former bringing down the latter and picking up a yellow card for his troubles. Jorginho stepped up and slotted it away to put Chelsea 1-0 up.
Chelsea brought on the young sensation Callum Hudson-Odoi in 63rd minute. The recently capped Englishman was out injured and made his comeback in the midweek win against Grimsby, and dazzled as he made his first league appearance of the season. With 15 minutes left, he picked up the ball and played it down the right to the advancing Willian. The Brazilian did a step over and took it into the box, and his shot was deflected past the helpless Ryan.
The hosts could have easily won by more, but will be happy to get Lampard's first home league win that moves them up to 6th in the league. Graham Potter's men were not expected to get anything from the match, and will look ahead to their next match at home to Tottenham.
