Desperation led to a red card. In the 69th minute of the match, Di Maria stamped on Fernandinho and the PSG man was sent off. The French club were 2-0 down on the night and they were unable to find a way through the Man City defence.
His behaviour, uncharacteristic of the Parisian winger, could see him face a lengthy ban. Di Maria is not a dirty player though. BeSoccer Pro data shows that he had not seen a single card in eight months.

The Argentine got his last card (a yellow one) on 13th September 2020 in the bad tempered clash between PSG and Marseille which ended up with five red cards. Since that game, he had gone 39 matches without seeing a card.
Di Maria has been sent off five times throughout his career and all of them have been straight red cards. One each for Argentina, Benfica and Real Madrid and twice for PSG. Since moving to Europe from Rosario Central, the only club he has not seen red at was for Man Utd. He spent the 2014-15 season there.
