Controversy in Madrid derby as ref turns down RM penalty shout

With 40 minutes gone in the derby, there was controversy and even the VAR got involved. Real Madrid asked for a penalty for handball by Felipe and the referee said no penalty.

The cross from the corner ended up striking the Atletico Madrid central defender on the arm when he tried to head the ball while Nacho and others were also going for the ball.

The referee was called over by VAR Jose Luis Gonzalez Gonzalez to review the incident on the monitor, but after a long look, he stuck with his initial call of no penalty. 

The handball rule and VAR has been in the spotlight recently because of the different decisions taken in other matches. On social media, some fans recalled an incident between Valencia and Villarreal on Friday.

Gerard Moreno headed the ball towards goal and the ball struck Gaya on the arm and he had his back to goal. Referee Xavier Estrada Fernandez went to the monitor and gave a penalty. That seemed a very harsh call. Shouls Real Madrid have had a spot kick at the Wanda?
