Beat Tottenham in the EFL Cup and now have to let 4 players go due to COVID-19

Colchester United announced that they will not resign 4 players whose contract ended due to the coronavirus.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues causing havoc in the lower tiers of English football. League 2 clubs (4th tier) are being forced to take worrying measures ahead of the future.

That is the case with Colchester United, the club that was the revelation of 2019 and who knocked Tottenham out of the EFL Cup when Mauricio Pochettino was still in charge.

Just over one year later, with the side 6th in the table and in the playoff spots, Colchester United have announced that they have let 4 key players go.

Captain Luke Prosser, Frank Nouble, Ryan Jackson, and Brandon Comley will not renew their deals at the club because of their high salary.

It is the first measure from a club to assure their short term viability and the president gave his explanation.

"These are players who would have continued and received a new contract in other circumstances, but not in the current ones. I will never make a decision that will hurt other people. We will be less strong when we return, but I don't think we are the only ones who will have to take these steps," concluded Robbie Cowling.
