Barcelona chairman Laporta confirms 2026 re-election bid

Though his mandate does not end for another year, Laporta is already looking ahead. Speaking on Friday, the 62-year-old confirmed his intention to stand again, underlining that the next elections will be held as scheduled, in June 2026.
Laporta began his second stint at the helm of the Catalan club in March 2021. It is due to conclude on 30 June 2026 — but he is determined to extend his leadership for another five years. In the wake of Barcelona's title triumph, he delivered a defiant message calling for continuity.
"Of course I want to run again," Laporta said. "I see that the results we aimed for are being achieved, that we're working very well — especially when you consider where we came from and where we are now. I believe we can be proud; we've saved the club and we're bringing it back to financial health."
"Above all, we now have a highly competitive team — not just for the present, but for the future. We'll soon be back at Spotify Camp Nou, and all of this gives me strength. It convinces me that we're on the right path. We've made the right calls, even if some of them were very tough decisions under huge pressure."
Laporta was clear in attributing the club's turnaround to the efforts of his administration: "This has been the year of the club's recovery, and I want to run again because I believe we're doing an excellent job. This project deserves to continue."
He acknowledged the difficulties along the way: "The programme we presented included controversial measures that had to be taken under intense pressure. I understand why some people didn't support them — they didn't know everything we were facing internally. It required cleverness, courage and determination."
Laporta also touched on ongoing challenges, including the Negreira case and the failed moves for Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor, once again pointing to what he described as a hostile external environment.
"We've had to stand up to a campaign of institutional discredit, pushed by some sectors — especially our rivals. And we had to endure the ordeal of registering players, made all the harder by the aggressive response of those who didn't want things to go well for us."
And with that, the Barcelona president made his intentions clear: "All of this gives me strength to continue. I believe the project I'm proud to lead deserves to move forward — because it's the best thing for Barcelona. Above all, we love this club, and everything we do is for its good."
