'Aubameyang goal should have been disallowed'

The goal came shortly after Alexandre Lacazette's superb opener, but the Gabonese striker was undoubtedly offside as he finished off a counter-attack.

'Toffees' boss Marco Silva was furious with the decision to allow the goal, with his side proving incapable of turning around their two-goal deficit.

“It’s really frustrating and I’ll tell you why,” said Silva. “We had in that moment just one defender in our box – Jonjoe Kenny – and so it’s too clear for the assistant referee. It was a counterattack and, after one pass, it’s two against one or three against one.

“It’s clear where Kenny is in that moment and it’s clear on the second touch [by Ramsey] where the player who finishes is as well. He’s clearly offside. For me, it’s a little bit strange but it’s OK. I make mistakes; my players as well. The assistant referees can make them.

“The goal was not a clear kill [of the game] because we kept trying but, of course, it was really hard for us. We were in control of the game in that moment. They’d scored a great goal [through Lacazette] but we’d try to fight for 1-1, for sure.”

Now, Clattenburg has come out in support of the Portuguese and accusing the linesman of losing concentration.

"Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's goal should have been ruled out for offside, you cannot argue otherwise," he wrote in a column for the 'Daily Mail'.

"The Arsenal striker is well off when the ball is flicked to him by Aaron Ramsey and the assistant has a good view.

"Moments earlier he had got a tight call spot on as the move developed in the Everton half but this mistake is clearly down to a split-second loss of concentration, just at the critical point Ramsey touches the ball."

The support will come as little comfort to Silva and Everton, who have won just one of their first six games of the season.
