"I am focussed on the national team now. When the Nations League finishes, I will decide what to do with my life," said the young 19 year-old footballer in comments given to 'Goal', after his debut with the Portugal senior team in the semi-final against Switzerland.
Joao Felix wanted to take the media spotlight off his future while he is with Portugal. In the middle of mass speculation, Benfica's young talent did not want to feed rumours despite the press insisting on the issue.
Nevertheless, the footballer knows that he figures on the agenda of teams like Man City, Man Utd, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and even Real Madrid. Despite his youth and brief professional career, the 120 million euros specified in his buyout clause do not seem to be any problem for his suitors.
"The goal is to keep the squad. If someone comes with 100 million for Joao Felix, the plan is not to sell him. 100 million is a lot of money, a player has never been sold for so much money in Portugal, but the objective is to win on the pitch and we will do everything we can to do that. If we don't get at least 120 million euros, the player will stay," warned Domingo Soares, the Benfica president.
In the meantime, the new Portuguese star is only thinking about the Nations League and he did not hesistate to praise Cristiano Ronaldo, who netted a hat-trick. "He is an idol, an idol all over the world and a role model for everyone. Just the fact I am alongside him and that I can train with a genius like him, allows to grow more. He always wants to keep improving. He is an inspiration for me."
