The Community Shield is English football's traitional season curtain-raiser as the previous season's FA Cup winners face the Premier League champions.
Taking place just three weeks after the World Cup final, this season's affair threatened to be something of a damp squib, but there were still a number of world stars on display for both sides.
Among them was Aguero, with the absences of Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling also giving young starlet Phil Foden the opportunity to line up in the City midfield.
The precocious talent played a key role in the opener as he drove from midfield before rolling the ball into the path of Aguero on the edge of the box, with the Argentine taking a touch before rifling low past Willy Caballero in the Chelsea goal.
The strike took Aguero's City tally up to 200, with the 30-year-old having only scored less than 28 goals in all competitions in one of his seven seasons with the club.
Unsurprisingly, that leaves Aguero well out in front as City's all-time record goalscorer.
