1. Eliminate the off-side rule
“Football starts looking more and more like handball,” says Van Basten
2. Temporary ejection to replace yellow cards
When a player is booked, his s team will get to play with 10 during five minutes
3. Handball to no longer be penalised with red card
Instead the player would get a yellow and be penalised with the temporary ejection explained above.
4. “Take-on challenge” to replace penalties
We would no longer have a penalty shoot-out but rather each one of the five players from each team would be given eight seconds to beat the opposing goalkeeper in an one-on-one play. This formula was followed in the USA in the 1980s.
5. Basketball-style foul system
Like in basketball, a player will foul out of the game after he commits five or six fouls.
6. Only team captains will be allowed to speak to the referee
7. Less games during the season
The maximum number of official matches a top player gets to play in a year should be reduced to about 50.
8. More subs
If a match goes to extra-time, teams will be allowed one or two subs more.
