'The New One' Effenberg takes charge of Paderborn

Having earned his coaching licence in 2012, the 47-year-old Effenberg has now taken his first managerial job and has a contract with second-division Paderborn until June 2017.

Mourinho described himself as 'special' when he became Chelsea manager in 2004, then last Friday Klopp quipped he was 'normal' as he took over at Liverpool.

Effenberg continued the theme in his first Paderborn press conference as he looks to revive a side that have lost seven of their opening 10 league games.

"I am the New One," he said as the ex-Bayern Munich midfielder, dubbed 'The Tiger', got his teeth into his new job.

"We'll keep looking forward, never to the side or behind us.

"The first 10 games don't count, we are starting fresh from here on. The quality is there."

Effenberg won the last of his 35 caps for Germany in 1998 and has been working as a television pundit since retiring from football a decade ago.

Having jetted back to Germany from his home on sunny Mallorca and touched down in heavy snow in North Rhine-Westphalia, Effenberg said he would not have taken the job if he had any doubts Paderborn could avoid a second relegation in as many seasons.

"I signed with full conviction. I wouldn't be here if I was not convinced of success," said Effenberg, who helped Bayern win the Champions League in 2001.

Wilfried Finke, president of Paderborn, said he was delighted when he heard Effenberg was interested in replacing Markus Gellhaus, who was sacked after last week's 1-0 defeat to Duisburg.

"As the name Effenberg came to me, I was downright euphoric," beamed Finke.

"Not many footballers in Germany have his quality. He is the right coach at the right time. Only Alpha types are able to guide a group."

Effenberg, whose team are just one place above the relegation spots, has wasted no time and took training on Wednesday afternoon while his first match will be at home against fourth-placed Eintracht Braunschweig on Friday evening.
