Chelsea awaited in the FA Cup final after besting Tottenham at Wembley, and Arsenal and Manchester City looked to join them at the same setting. Guardiola's side came out on the front foot, piling the pressure on the Gunners early and having the best chances in the opening minutes with a shot from De Bruyne and a header from Silva which was cleared by Cech.
Arsenal, however also posed a threat for the Citizens when Sanchez or Ozil combined to counterattack. First, Arsenal had a goal disallowed after Koscielny received offside to bang past Bravo. Next, it was City that would appeal to the referee, after Oxlade-Chamberlain appeared to trip Aguero in the box, prompting the groans from the City supporters.
However, it was about to get much worse as Sterling looked to blast the ball into the net only to see the assistant lifting his flag to have the goal disallowed. Sane crossed to the back post from the byline and Aguero volleyed at Cech. Sterling picked up the rebound to make sure, even though Aguero's strike had gone in. To the winger's dismay, the linesman waved that Sane's cross had crossed the line.
Arsenal came out a completely different side in the second half, holding a high line to put pressure on City and enjoyed a few chances. Despite the reversed roles, it was the Citizens who took the lead on the counterattack. The City defence cleared its lines and Aguero did great to get through on Cech and chip the ball over the keeper.
Again Wenger's side managed to recompose well and, after a couple of warnings, equalised through Monreal. Oxlade-Chamberlain whipped in a great ball from the right for the onrushing left-back to tap in at the back post.
Having drawn the match level, Arsenal gave the ball away a bit, and City took a step forward. First, Toure volleyed from outside the box to see his ball bounce on to the upright, after Cech got his fingertips to the ball, and then Fernandinho rose to meet a De Bruyne corner and thump the ball on to the crossbar. However, nobody managed to take the lead again and the game went into extra-time.
It was tight in the opening minutes, with neither team willing to take unnecessary risks, but Arsenal managed to take the lead in the first half. Alexis Sanchez turned in a ball he picked up inside the box after an Ozil free kick from the left. From then on, the Citizens looked for a goal to take the game to the penalties but it was not to be.
Wenger beat Guardiola, and the Frenchman might just be able to salvage a disastrous season for the Gunners. After an entertaining semi-final, Arsenal will play their twentieth FA Cup final, with Chelsea awaiting on the 27th of May.
