Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo came close to signing a deal with Barcelona, because of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Ronaldo joined Real in 2009 and has since gone on to win trophies, personal and collective, and become a club icon. However, it seems Ferguson tried to stop the Portuguese ace from joining his current club.
Finally, the player's decision prevailed, as Ramon Calderon told Sky Sports: 'The main point as I said before is that the player is willing to leave and is willing to come to Real'.
'It happened with Cristiano [Ronaldo]. [Sir Alex] Ferguson is not very keen on Real Madrid and he proved that with an interview a few weeks ago'.
The Scottish manager had come to terms with Ronaldo's departure, but he felt happier with him joining Barcelona, a club he found more appealing for his protégé: 'He didn't want him to come to Real and he offered him to Barcelona but the player said "I want to go to Real Madrid" and that's it. That's why he came'.
