Former Liverpool defender Carragher is not short of knowledge of the derby and what it means to those playing in it, having contested plenty during his playing days.
Whilst Carragher had an incredible record in the fixture, losing just five times in 15 years, Rooney's stats aren't quite so impressive, with the boyhood Evertonian having never scored or been on the winning side in a derby.
However, Carragher sees that as an opportunity for the former Manchester United man.
'He is not yet an Everton icon. He is a Manchester United one. These games present him with the opportunity he has craved since his return - to restore hero status with his own fans,' Carragher told 'The Telegraph.
Should Rooney fail, the former Liverpool man is sure that it won't be down to a lack of desire.
'He will be like a man possessed this week, those sitting near him will have sensed it,' Carragher explained.
'He will relish these games but also worry about them at the same time. He will be visualising the possibility of celebrating, while agonising about the reaction if neither game goes Everton's way.'
Making the difference in the Merseyside derby would be yet another feather in Rooney's cap in what has been a glittering career.
Join us tomorrow for live coverage of the game to see if Rooney can cement his place in Everton folklore.
