In their last match in the competition, the side from Sao Paulo were defeated in a thrilling 3-4 match by Argentinian side Defensa y Justicia. The Argentines repeatedly went in front before Palmeiras continued to equalise, and with Gustavo Scarpa's strike on 75 minutes the match looked destined for a draw. However, Defensa y Justicia's Romero scored a dramatic 94th winner to give the away side all three points.

Going into Friday's match, Palmeiras remain top despite that loss. Universitario find themselves at the other end of the table, rooted to the bottom with just four points.
