Bayern claimed their first silverware of the new season after twice coming from behind to beat Borussia Dortmund on penalties in the German Super Cup final.

Dortmund midfielder Nuri Sahin had the game’s first effort as he took aim from 30 yards but his effort was deflected away for a corner.

Dortmund almost capitalised on some early Bayern sloppiness when Ulreich dwelled on the ball under pressure, the keeper could only clear as far as Pulisic, but he was brought down by Kimmich before he could capitalise.

Bayern then had their first sighted as Lewandowski thundered an effort over the bar after taking down a ball over the top from Muller.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side were made to rue that miss just minutes later as Christian Pulisic gave Dortmund the lead. Bayern took a quick free kick in their own half and a sloppy touch from Martinez allowed the American to nip in and race clear. With just Ulreich to beat, Pulisic made no mistake slotting the ball to the keeper’s left to give his side the lead.

Bayern responded well, Ribery drew a good save from Burki after cutting in from the left and just minutes later, the sides were level.

Joshua Kimmich was given the freedom of Signal Iduna Park and Rudy sent the right-back racing clear down the right, he drove a low cross across the face of goal and Robert Lewandowski was on hand to turn the ball home from four yards.

That marked the start of a spell of pressure for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Kimmich once again got in down the right but this time his cross was cleared by Sokratis.

Bayern caught Dortmund out with a quickly-taken corner that eventually presented Muller with a shooting opportunity, but the ball took an age to drop and his effort was blocked away to safety.

After Muller was flagged offside at one end, Dortmund counted with purpose. Dahoud drove forward and got a shot away that was blocked away, but only as far as Dembele who sent the ball back into the box. The delivery found Castro unmarked and the midfielder fired an improvised backheel goalwards, only to be denied by Ulreich.

The Bavarians responded in kind, Ribery jinked inside down the left flank and crossed low for Mulled. The German directed an effort towards goal but Bruki made a fine save away to his right.

When Burki was beaten after 34 minutes, the post came to his rescue.Kimmich crossed from the right after good hold-up play from Lewandowski. Muller rose highest and directed a header towards the near post but his effort hit the outside of the post and goes wide.

Bayern continued to look the most likely to take the lead and they threatened again when Ribery found Tolisso with a cross from the left. Zagadou let let the Frenchman ghost in and direct a header towards goal but it was always going wide.

Barta had to be alert to clear a cross after Muller got in down the right. Before a half-cleared corner found Rudy 25 yards out. The midfielder took aim and his shot wasn’t dealt with convincingly by Burki but the linesman's flag saves his blushes as Muller looked to pounce.

There was just enough time left in the first half for Muller to lash a shot over the bar from range in the aftermath of a free kick, but ultimately, the two sides went in at the break level. In an attempt to wrestle some control in midfield, dortmund boss Peter Bosz withdrew Dahoud at the break, bringing on Rode.

Dortmund launched the first attack of the second period as Sahin looked to play in Dembele over the top but the ball just ran away from the Frenchman.

Sahin fired a free kick just over before Carlo Ancelotti was forced into a change on the hour mark as Javi Martinez went down holding his calf. He was replaced by new boy Niklas Sule and dortmund continued to apply pressure.

Gonzalo Castro fired wide from range before being inches away from connecting with Dembele’s cross from the right.

Dortmund made their spell of pressure pay, re-taking the lead after 71 minutes. Rode found Dembele just inside the Bayern half, the Frenchman spun and sent Aubameyang racing clear with an inch-perfect through ball. The Gabon international waited for Ulreich to commit before lifting the ball over him and into the far corner.

Sahin then saw another free kick comfortably saved as Dortmund looked to turn the screw.

Bayern caused their hosts a few nervy moments at the game moved into the last 10 minutes. Sokratis had to be at full stretch to clear Kimmich’s ball in from the right whilst Vidal’s header from the resulting corner was certainly on target before Bartra hacked it clear.

Bayern equalised late on in scruffy fashion. Rudy’s free-kick from the right was headed against the bar by Sule. The ball dropped in the six yard box and Dortmund failed to clear, leading to what can only be described as carnage. Kimmich prodded it goalwards but the final touch came from Dortmund defender Lukasz Piszczek.

Coman tried his luck from range as Bayern looked to snatch the victory in normal time but his effort was straight at Burki.

With both teams still level at the end of 90 minutes the game was decided by penalties.

Dortmund had an early advantage after Burki saved Kimmich's effort but Ulreich denied both Sebastian Rode and Marc Bartra to hand Bayern the victory.

The victory will come as a welcome boost to Carlo Ancelotti's men after a disappointing pre-season campaign.
