UEFA insisted on Friday that they don't have an alternative plan for the final 8 of the Champions League in Portugal, despite the country suffering an apparent spike in coronavirus cases which has provoked new restrictive measures from the Portuguese government.
"There is currently no reason to have a plan B, but we are assessing the situation daily and will adapt when the time comes and if necessary", a UEFA spokesperson told 'DPA'.
On 17th June, when the governing body announced their plans for the club competitions, their president, the Slovenian Aleksander Ceferin, already warned that they had full confidence in Portugal and had no alternative.
Due to the increase in coronavirus cases, some parts of the capital Lisbon, the location chosen for the final 8, have had to be put in lockdown again for two weeks from 1st July, according to Antonio Costa, the president of a country which has received praise for how they have handled the pandemic.
"UEFA are in constant contact with the Portuguese Football Federation, just as they are with the Portuguese authorities," added the UEFA spokesperson. "We hope that everything will be fine and that it will be possible to organise this final to 8 in Portugal", they added.
