Spence makes history as first Muslim to play for England

Defender Djed Spence has etched his name into English football history, becoming the first openly declared Muslim player to debut for the England senior team in Tuesday's 5-0 thrashing of Serbia in Belgrade.
The 25-year-old Tottenham player, born in London, replaced Reece James in the 69th minute, a symbolic moment for British Muslims, who make up nearly 6% of the country's population.
"I was surprised because I didn't know I was the first, so it's a blessing. I hope it motivates children around the world to believe they can achieve it too," he declared after the match.
Spence's debut was celebrated by organisations such as Nujum Sports, which supports more than 400 Muslim athletes.
Its founder, Ebadur Rahman, stressed that "it is a moment of celebration for Muslims", because Djed is not only playing for England but for "Muslims around the world".
Developed in Fulham's academy, with spells at Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and several loan spells abroad, Spence signed for Tottenham Hotspur in 2022 and, under Ange Postecoglou, established himself in the first team, contributing to the conquest of the 2024-25 Europa League, the club's first title in 17 years.
