Sir Alex turned down Zidane in favour of Cantona

Winning the World Cup, scoring that goal in the Champions League final in 2002, there were so many moments when Zinedine Zidane stunned the footballing world.

Now linked with the manager's job at Old Trafford, the Frenchman could have been at Old Trafford a lot sooner.

While he was at Bordeaux and the top clubs in Europe were fighting for his signature, Man Utd were one of those clubs that could have brought him in.

Martin Edwards, the former CEO of the club recalls how there was the possibility Zidane would sign for the 'Red Devils' at the time, but that Sir Alex Ferguson passed up the opportunity.

The Scottish coach felt that his arrival would affect another French magician in Eric Cantona, who was serving an eight month ban for kicking a fan in a game.

Zidane continued at Juventus, picking up the Ballon D'Or award in 1998 before becoming a 'Galactico' with Real Madrid where he went on to win the Champions League in 2002.

Could he finally get his chance to join the club decades later, but now in the post that Sir Alex held for almost three decades.
