The Portuguese came into the knockout stages with 114 goals in the Champions League. However, if you take away the goals he scored for Manchester United he stood on only 99 for Real Madrid. With his strike on Wednesday night he became the first player to score 100 goals with the same club in the Champions League.

From a psychological point of view it was a very important goal, helping the team to go into the break level creating a much more positive atmosphere in the dressing room. Ronaldo, who almost never misses penalties, had a laser shone in his eye but simply closed them, stepped up and crashed an effort into the bottom right corner even with Areola guessing the right way.
He was concentrated on the ball, going through all his usual pre-penalty motions. He hit the penalty with perhaps a little more force than usual, but his team needed him to be assertive and to lead tonight.
The foul from which the penalty came has created debate. Lo Celso ran across Kroos and the German went down, but the contact was minimal. After the penalty was given, Lo Celso can probably count himself lucky that he didn't see a second yellow card.
