Premier League set to launch semi-automated offside technology

This significant step follows a series of non-live tests within the league, coupled with live implementations seen in the FA Cup earlier this season.

Semi-automated offside technology is designed to assist the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) by automating key aspects of the offside review process, ensuring faster and more accurate decisions.

By leveraging advanced optical player tracking, the system can efficiently position the virtual offside line, helping officials make real-time decisions with greater precision.

Developed through a close collaboration between the Premier League, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), and sports data and technology company Genius Sports, the system has been thoroughly tested to ensure it meets the highest standards of reliability and accuracy.

The aim is not only to increase the speed of offside decisions but also to maintain the integrity of the game, allowing for fairer and more consistent outcomes.
