Fernando Hierro will not continue as Spain head coach or return to his previous role as sporting director following the World Cup, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has confirmed.
Hierro took charge of Spain during their disappointing World Cup campaign after Julen Lopetegui was sensationally sacked just days before the start of the tournament.
'La Roja' failed to really convince in Russia, before eventually being knocked out by the hosts on penalties in the last 16.
Following that disappointment, Hierro refused to discuss his future in the role and the Royal Spanish Football Federation has now announced that his contract has been mutually terminated due to the former Real Madrid defender's lack of desire to continue in either role.
"Following a long journey together, the Royal Spanish Football Federation and Fernando Hierro bring an end to the relationship between the two parties after Spain's participation in the World Cup in Russia. The caretaker manager declined the opportunity to return to his previous post of Sporting Director of the organisation in order to seek a ove to pastures new and new professional challenges," the RFEF announced.
There were no hard feeling as the federation made sure to "underline the professional and human values of an extraordinary sportsman to whom we wish the best of luck."
Hieror represented Spain 89 times as a player, before first becoming Sporting Director for his country between 2007 and 2011 and later returning to the role in 2017.
