The 38-year-old had been expected to retire this summer after being released by Huddersfield at the end of last season, but the 'Blues' have successfully convinced him to put that decision off for a year.
The former England international has signed a one-year deal at Stamford Bridge, where he will provide back-up to Thibaut Courtois and Willy Caballero.
Speaking to Chelsea's official website, Green said: "It has been a whirlwind 24 hours. You are thinking about your career and where you want to go and then you get a phone call like this, and it is a short conversation.
"It has been a pretty dramatic time for me and I can’t wait to get started. I am absolutely delighted and it is a thrill and an honour to be here."
Green brings a wealth of Premier League experience to Chelsea, having represented Norwich, West Ham and QPR across a long career, as well as travelling to two major tournaments with England.
The veteran has made over 250 Premier League appearances since graduating form the Norwich academy, though it seems improbable that he will get the chance to add to that total this season.
