Ronald Araujo was born in Uruguay, on 7th March 1999. The young central defender began playing professionally for his hometown team, and later joined the lower categories at Rentistas in the Uruguayan Second Division.
At the age of 23, Araujo has become a key player in Barcelona's defence and, after months of negotiations and compromises on both sides, this deal has been agreed. As with the recent renewals of Pedri and Ansu Fati, his buyout clause has also been set at one billion euros.
The negotiations to renew Araujo's contract, as well as Gavi's, have been surrounded by very sincere press appearances by Xavi Hernandez. The Spanish coach has always made it clear in front of journalists what he thinks of these players, who are fundamental to the basis of the project he is developing.
The centre-back has managed to consolidate his place in the Catalan defence this season. He has managed to play a total of 42 games in all competitions, despite some injuries. He will face his fifth season as one of Xavi's starting centre-backs..

Araujo refused other offers
Araujo's performances for Barcelona caught the eye of many teams in the Premier League. In fact, the defender has had teams offer him a salary multiple times higher than that offered by Barca. The Catalan club's proposal is already high taking into account their economic situation.
Ronald Araujo expressed his joy for signing a new contract with Barcelona until 2026. "I'm really happy to be able to stay here, to stay for many more years. It is the fruit of a lot of hard work, so I thank all the coaches who have helped me."
The defender also spoke about how special it is to hear the fans shouting 'Uruguayan' at him, as they used to do with Luis Suarez, and feeling their support. "When I came to the club and joined the B team, it was a tremendous thing to get to the first team. My wish now is for many titles to be won here."
