Both Leo Messi and Barcelona have now started a new era, but there is still one loose end that will keep the two tied for a while. It all has to do with the player's contract, which expired on 30th June 2021.
According to information revealed by 'El Mundo' months ago regarding the contract of the Argentine star, Barcelona included a loyalty bonus in his contract worth 78 million euros. Now, 'El Español' have reported that Barcelona still have to pay Messi a total of 39 million, a fairly significant amount considering the more than complicated situation of the Catalan club's finances.
Said payment, having ended his contract, corresponds to Leo Messi in its totality and Barcelona made the decision to pay it in two stages. The club already paid the first part in June 2020, but still have the second payment outstanding.
To this day, Barcelona will have to keep on doing the maths to resolve all the clauses that were signed in Leo Messi's contract, as they still have to pay an amount which could easily be used on bringing in a new recruit.
